Big Trucks on I-20 are Breaking the Law

Since December 2023, Louisiana Revised Statute 32:237 has banned 18-wheelers from the I-20 construction zone through Shreveport and Bossier, where narrow lanes raise the risk of scrapes and multi-car crashes. Despite digital signage, many truckers ignore the detour; police issued more than 300 tickets in early 2024. This page explains the ban and why violations endanger nearby drivers.

You’ve probably seen – and gotten stuck in – the construction traffic on I-20 in Bossier. You’ve probably also seen the big trucks and 18-wheelers squeezing into the lane in front of you.

In December 2023, the LA Revised Statute 32:237 went into effect, banning all 18-wheelers from traveling through the I-20 construction zone. The narrow passageway offers little room for error for truck drivers and can result in scraping up against concrete barriers, slowed traffic, and even accidents. The travel routes are so narrow any driver’s mistake can lead to serious injury or a major multi-car accident. Despite the numerous digital and static signs posted up and down the highway, truckers have continued to break the law by failing to detour.

“They’re ignoring it. It’s not a lack of signage. These are on our large digital message boards. This is not a small static sign we’re talking about. They’re placed all over as you enter the work zone on either end of it in both Shreveport and Bossier,” said Erin Buchanan, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDODT) spokesperson.

Police from both sides of the Red River have diligently enforced the ban on big trucks. In the first few months of 2024, more than 300 tickets were issued to truckers for failure to comply with the statute and follow posted signage.

This has put drivers like you in danger of more than just a time delay. Our firm has gotten numerous calls from locals and out-of-town drivers complaining of injuries after being hit by these negligent truck drivers. We’ve also gotten calls from truckers looking for help getting out of tickets and fines, but we send those guys on their way!  At Morris & Dewett Injury Lawyers, we represent injured motorists against big truckers who ignore signs and safety precautions and break the law.
