Baby Food Companies Are Sued Over Lead Warning Labels

When lead is found in the body, it can led to disastrous results; particularly for children between the ages of 1 and 6 years old. Lead exposure is harmful and can enter into the blood stream by a number of ways such as being swallowed (through food, dirt, etc.), by inhalation, or even absorbed through the skin. This exposure in high levels can cause growth problems in young children, and affect their nervous system, among many other serious health ramifications.

According to news sources, three baby food makers are benign sued for the fact that despite their products containing higher levels of lead in the product, they do not offer a warning to users who are feeding the food to their babies. Gerber Products, Del Monte Foods and Beech-Nut Nutrition are among the three culprits that are being taken to court after they have not followed the requirement of California Proposition 65 which claims that any that they are required to warn users of lead and other chemicals present in their product.

According to the Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention, there are believed to be about half a million children in the U.S. who are suffering from lead poisoning in their blood streams through the various avenues of exposure mentioned above. Unfortunately the companies are arguing that the lead present in their foods are still lower than what would make it an "unacceptable health risk," therefore making their product safe.

A represenative with the Environment Law Foundation argues that despite the amount of lead in the product, the users have the right to know when toxic chemical may even have the slightest presence in their food. No level of lead is safe for a human, especially when a newborn is being exposed.
