School Cafeterias: Abiding by the Health Code

When you send your children to school, you want to be sure that they will be fed healthy, properly prepared food. Recently, KSLA News decided to inspect a variety of cafeterias at local schools in order to determine whether or not kids were getting the food that they need to be healthy and active. When the news station inspected local schools, they found that five Beinville educational facilities passed their health code checkups with flying colors. Then there was the Arcadia school. This one educational facility was given a non-critical violation. Non-critical violations are not actual health threats at present, but could turn into one in the future.

This Arcadia school failed to post their food safety permit in the cafeteria as is required in the state of Louisiana. The accident was corrected while inspectors were at the facility. According to the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention, schools need to follow a nutrition policy that promotes healthy eating. They also need to provide nutrition education from preschool on through secondary school in order to show children what they should and shouldn’t eat in order to stay healthy. The CDC says that school-based programs play a significant role in the promotion of healthy eating.

Schools that serve unhealthy or unsanitary food can be held responsible for harming students at the school. Sometimes food that is properly prepared can still be unhealthy for young children, and end up causing tooth decay, obesity, iron-deficiency anemia, malnutrition, diabetes, heart disease, or a variety of other health issues. If your child has developed an illness because of the unhealthy food promoted at a school cafeteria or was severely food poisoned because the food was not prepared correctly, then you may be able to sue the school for compensation.
